Maryam Rajavi and the Plan for Women’s Rights in Iran

There are ten areas that Maryam Rajavi and the National Council of Resistance of Iran (NCRI) see as in need of improvement in terms of gender equality in Iran.
Let’s explore those ten areas and how Maryam Rajavi would tackle them in more detail.

1. Fundamental freedoms and rights
Maryam Rajavi believes that women should have the same human rights and fundamental freedoms as men and vows to ban any type of discrimination against women, in order to ensure that women are equal to men in all economic, social and political spheres.
2. Legal Equality
Maryam Rajavi believes that women and men should have equal protection under the law. Thus, she would:
• raise of the criminal age of responsibility for girls in Iran to 18
• make courts recognize that testimonies and affidavits from women hold equal weight to those from men
• guarantee women’s access to the police and the courts in cases of violence, rape and sexual assault, discrimination, and deprivation of liberty

Iran Human Rights Monitor – Monthly Report
February 2018

introduction
Systematic violation of human rights continued in February with 16 executions, crackdown on religious minorities, arresting of civil activists, incessant pressure on political prisoners and flogging.
On Wednesday, January 24, 2018, two women political prisoners of Evin –Atena Daemi and Golrokh Iraee—were beaten up and banished to the notorious women’s Qarchak Prison, in Varamin, Tehran Province.
Protesting the illegal transfer, the two staged a hunger strike on February 3.
On the morning of Saturday, February 10, 2018, they turned their wet hunger strike into dry, as they had already vowed. Both stopped their dry hunger strike after six days but Golrokh Iraee announced that she will continue her wet hunger strike until her demands are met.
Since February 1, the two are held in horrible conditions in a small, dark room in Qarchak Prison while they are denied having telephone contacts or family visits.

Women’s Economic Empowerment in Iran, Moving in the Opposite Direction

The international community has made an unprecedented commitment to gender equality and women’s empowerment, in the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.
In a bold measure, the United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres announced his initiative to achieve parity at senior levels by 2021, and across the board by 2028. For his part, he appointed 17 women and 15 men to the senior management groups of the United Nations but stressed that “the changes needed are not just to recruitment systems and staff rules, but to our own attitudes and approaches.”
The UN Commission on the Status of Women (CSW) set this year’s theme, “women’s economic empowerment in the changing world of work,” and made specific recommendations[1] to all member states to take steps to fulfill their commitments towards planet 50-50 by 2030.

I tell you that every day I will let the world know of the

FREEDOM FIGHTERS, WOMEN’S PRO-DEMOCRACY STRUGGLE IN IRAN

By Mahdavi Nasim
“Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world. Indeed, it’s the only thing that ever has.” That was Margaret Mead’s conclusion after a lifetime of observing very diverse cultures around the world.
This is the story of diligent women’s rights activist, is a litany of achievements against tremendous odds, of ingenious strategies and outrageous tactics used to outwit opponents and make the most of limited resources. It’s a dramatic tale, filled with great women facing down incredible obstacles to win that most basic civil right in Iran.

Rebellious and resilient, Iran’s women are the force for change

Women are indeed the Force for Change.
This was vividly seen in Iran throughout the past year and of course, most conspicuously during the uprising in December and January.
Although the situation in Iran is extremely oppressive for women and they have borne the brunt of repression for the past 39 years, they are not submissive contrary to the regime’s expectation.
Gender discrimination, gender segregation, and various restrictions have made Iranian women not just rebellious but also very resilient.
Look at women’s education in Iran. Low legal age of marriage and forcible marriage of

Maryam Rajavi and the Equal Participation of Women in the Iranian Resistance

In an earlier piece, we covered how the National Council of Resistance of Iran (NCRI) and its president-elect Maryam Rajavi would improve the lives of Iranian women in 10 key areas ranging from employment to marriage to the legal system.
This piece will cover women’s participation in the political system in more detail.
In our earlier piece, we wrote that Maryam Rajavi believes that women should have equal rights to participate in the country's political leadership, including the formulation and implementation of government policy, the holding of public office, and the ability to perform all public functions at all levels of government.
What we want to know now is why Maryam Rajavi thinks that this is important for women’s rights?
Simply put, Maryam Rajavi believes that women are just as capable as men in every way, so there is no reason why they should not serve in the political sector, especially as they so often do much of the work in political movements without

What Happened to the MEK During the 1979 Revolution? Part 4

This is the fourth and final piece in a series about the People's Mojahedin Organization of Iran (PMOI/MEK) and the 1979 Iranian Revolution.
When we left off last time, the mullahs had stolen the 1979 Revolution from the MEK and the people of Iran and were instead using it to serve their own interests. Ruhollah Khomeini had returned from exile only to appoint Supreme Leader (essentially, naming himself king) and appoint the clergy to the government against the wishes of the Iranian People.
The MEK had made clear that they were opposed to this, rejected the mullahs’ offer of ill-gotten power, and had launched a campaign to run against the mullahs in the proposed 1980 election. For that, the Supreme Leader ordered his terrorist gangs (Hezbollah) to attack the MEK.
The MEK took a position of non-violence and waited for the election, which would rightly see them elected as members of parliament. The mullahs

WHAT REALLY HAPPENED TO THE MEK AT CAMP ASHRAF IN IRAQ?

by Mahmood Hakamian
In 1986, around 1,000 members of the People’s Mojahedin Organization of Iran (PMOI/MEK) traveled to Iraq in order to build a new operations base for their resistance group with the hopes of bringing democracy to Iran.
They were given a barren patch of land in the desert, near the Iranian border, which had a few deserted and partially-constructed buildings, but no running water or electricity. This was Camp Ashraf. It expanded quickly as MEK supporters from the US and the EU traveled to the camp in order to help free the Iranian people from the grasp of the mullahs.

Iranian Resistance Urgent Call to Save Two Lady Political Prisoners on 11th Day of Hunger Strike

The Iranian Resistance calls to save political prisoners, Atena Daemi and Golrokh Iraee, who are in a dire situation due to 11 days of hunger strike. The NCRI calls on international human rights and women's rights advocates to take urgent action to save the lives of the two political prisoners. The two young women are exposed to verbal abuse and harassment by prison authorities in addition to the effects of hunger strike.
On January 24, Atena Daemi and Golrokh Iraee were unlawfully transferred from Evin Prison to Varamin’s Qarechak Prison in retaliation for supporting the January uprising, after being brutalized on fake charges and a fabricated new case.

Can Fake News Save Iran's Mullahs?

Iran's protests are proving how the people demand change to a democratic system. These nationwide demonstrations, rejecting the entirety of Iran's regime, and U.S. President Donald Trump's positions, alongside other administration officials such as Vice President Pence and UN Ambassador Nicki Haley, have angered Iran's lobbyists and appeasement supporters in the U.S. They have launched retaliatory measures supporting Tehran.
