Systematic violation of human rights continued in February with 16 executions, crackdown on religious minorities, arresting of civil activists, incessant pressure on political prisoners and flogging.

On Wednesday, January 24, 2018, two women political prisoners of Evin –Atena Daemi and Golrokh Iraee—were beaten up and banished to the notorious women’s Qarchak Prison, in Varamin, Tehran Province.

Protesting the illegal transfer, the two staged a hunger strike on February 3.

On the morning of Saturday, February 10, 2018, they turned their wet hunger strike into dry, as they had already vowed. Both stopped their dry hunger strike after six days but Golrokh Iraee announced that she will continue her wet hunger strike until her demands are met.

Since February 1, the two are held in horrible conditions in a small, dark room in Qarchak Prison while they are denied having telephone contacts or family visits.

Iranian Resistance Urgent Call to Save Two Lady Political Prisoners on 11th Day of Hunger Strike

The Iranian Resistance calls to save political prisoners, Atena Daemi and Golrokh Iraee, who are in a dire situation due to 11 days of hunger strike. The NCRI calls on international human rights and women's rights advocates to take urgent action to save the lives of the two political prisoners. The two young women are exposed to verbal abuse and harassment by prison authorities in addition to the effects of hunger strike. 
On January 24, Atena Daemi and Golrokh Iraee were unlawfully transferred from Evin Prison to Varamin’s Qarechak Prison in retaliation for supporting the January uprising, after being brutalized on fake charges and a fabricated new case.

On Tuesday, February 13, protests, strikes and demonstrations of workers, looted people, students, and other people continued throughout Iran:

1. More than 2,000 university professors and educating residents and radiology specialists staged protest gathering in front of the Ministry of Health building in Tehran. They protested against the regime's directive about allowing ultrasound devices to be used by non-specialists. Their placards said: 'Medical Equipment Mafia: How much is worth the lives of pregnant mothers?' and 'Destruction of Radiology is Destruction of the Whole Medicine'.

Iran: a Short History of the Mek

The People’s Mojahedin Organization of Iran or Mojahedin-e Khalq (PMOI/MEK) is a political group dedicated to the realization of a free and democratic Iran, but how did it start?

On September 6, 1965, the MEK was founded by three engineers Mohammad Hanifnejad, Said Mohsen, and Ali-Ashgar Badizadgan.

They had previously been involved with the Freedom/Liberation Movement, created by Medhi Bazargan in May 1961, which advocated for the democratic principles that were laid out in the Iranian constitution following the 1905 resolution. The group had been allowed to peacefully assemble and advocate for political freedom and the separation of powers for two years.

However, in 1963, Ruhollah Khomeini gave a public speech criticising the monarchy and was arrested. In response, large free speech and anti-monarchy protests broke out across Iran, which the Freedom Party supported.

NCRI - Iran Human Rights Monitor has compiled a report detailing the human rights situation in Iran for the month of January 2018.

Last month, there was a huge crackdown on protesters. At the end of December, the people of Iran took to the streets because of the poor economic situation that is caused by the regime’s mishandling of the nation’s wealth. The protests quickly turned into anti-government demonstrations. The security forces violently suppressed the protesters and there were at least 50 deaths. The report also indicates that more than 8,000 protesters were arrested.

The report mentioned that teargas and water cannons were used to disperse crowds and unarmed protesters were shot at. Plainclothes agents went from home to home to arrest people and there have been reports of detainees being tortured “to the brink of death”. There have also been accounts of detainees being put into freezer rooms to force confessions out of them.

The people took to the streets protesting against skyrocketing prices while the general public’s purchasing power is next to nothing.

In addition to the arrest of more than 8,000 people and the killing of at least 50 during the nationwide protests, other systematic violations of human rights continued in January.
