Journalist sentenced to flogging and prison

A 24-year-old journalist from Gilan, northern Iran, was sentenced to flogging and prison.
Arash Shoa Shargh who ran the Gilan-e No website was tried after the Rasht Prosecutor, Rasht representative in the Majlis, a Rasht Governorate official and the Rasht Municipality filed complaints against him. He was sentenced to three months of suspended prison, 47 lashes, a heavy fine, and a ban on all journalistic activities. He is scheduled to go to a court of review on July 23.
Notably, six journalists were sentenced to flogging in the past year in various Iranian provinces.
